On Reading Slowly
A short note, the kind I want more of here.
I am trying to relearn how to read slowly — to stay on one paragraph long enough that it stops being information and starts being an address. Most of what I read quickly, I do not keep. The page I read four times, I carry for years.
The old writers assumed this. They wrote to be chewed, not skimmed, and they trusted that a reader would return. I want to write that way too, eventually: a little, and worth coming back to.
So this is partly a promise about the site. Fewer words. Slower ones.
